Wearing a Motorcycle Leather Vest is somonis with cruiser and touring style motorcycles and is a big part of the Harley-Davidson Culture. The vest, also commonly called a cut, got its start in the 40's and 50's, when riders would cut the sleeves off of their sweaters. There are a lot of benefits to wearing a vest. It does a great job of keeping your core warm, when riding in cold weather. It provides added protection in the event of an accident. It provides some level of protection in warmer weather when a rider chooses not to wear a full jacket. I gives you extra pockets to store things or keep things handy. Most notoriously, it gives riders a place to display patches. Vest are often a requirement in the Motorcycle Club community. Cautionary tale, please, do not war a three piece rocker on your vest unless you are an actual member of a club. Club members take it very seriously, and it's really not a conversation you want to have with a club member.

Vest can be worn on their own, but are most commonly warn over a shirt. If you are wearing a riding jacket, the vest can be worn over or under a jacket. If you are in a MC, you will be wearing it over your jacket, unless your jacket has your MC patches also. You should consider how you will wear the vest when selecting the right size. Obviously, if you are going to wear it over a jacket, you should size up.

A well fitting vest should come to the bottom of your belt when standing. A vest that is too long can bunch up and be uncomfortable when riding. When seating on the motorcycle, the vest should not push up or make it uncomfortable to bend.

Club Style Vest

There are a variety of styles of vest. Currently, the most popular style is called a club vest. A club vest comes all the way up to your neck, similar to a jacket. It will either have a zipper, snaps, or both the entire length of the jacket. Some of these vest will have a small collar, but not always. Another very popular style is a traditional or sometimes called western vest. A traditional vest will have a V-neck and will usually have three or four snaps to secure it.

Laced Traditional Vest

Vest may have a closed side or a laced side. A laced side allows you to adjust the tightness of the vest by simply retying laces once sized correctly. Most traditional vest will offer a laced side. For a closed side, it is made much like a jacket. Obviously, finding the right fit is very important on a closed side as it is not adjustable. Rarely, you may see a vest with elastic on the side to allow the vest to stretch a little.

When shopping for a vest, quality matters. For many riders, their vest is just as personal if not more personal than their motorcycle. You may only ever buy one or two, if you get a good quality vest. I encourage you to look for a vest made from full grain leather with a good quality liner. I would encourage you to take a look at Fox Creek Leather. Fox Creek Leather makes some of the nicest vest on the market. They are made in the USA. They are based in Virginia, but work with local craftsmen around the United States to delivery a great quality product.
