The Outrush R Modular Helmet by Sena, might be one of the best values on the market. This has been my go to helmet for several months. The Outrush R is a modular helmet with integrated Bluetooth speakers and microphone. It offers a ton of features in a quality helmet at an affordable price.
Outrush R Modular Helmet Design
The Outrush R uses a traditional modular design that is DOT and ECE approved. The chin bar can be raised allowing you to have a conversation, take a drink, or to scratch your nose (what I use it for most). It comes in very handy when you hop off the bike for a second to open the garage door or to maximize visibility when backing into a tight spot. The clear face shield can also be raised separate from the chin bar. I wish the face shield had a pin lock to prevent fogging, but it's not a deal breaker. There is a stick on pin lock system that might work with this visor, but I have not attempted that yet. So far, fogging has been minimal. The shield does have an anti fog coating and provides UV protection.
The helmet also offers a drop down visor. The visor does a very good job of blocking glare and is very dark, which I prefer. Not having to have glasses is a big plus. You can run the drop down visor during the day and flip it up when the sun goes down and never have to worry about if you remembered to bring your night time glasses. The visor is operated by a lever on the side of the helmet. It is easy to operate, even when wearing gloves. The visor does vibrate some at highway speeds, but no more than any other modular helmet I've worn.
Ventilation on the helmet is very good. There are vents located on the top of the helmet and on the front of the chin bar. The vents on the chin bar can be opened and closed, but the top vents remain open. I do wish you could close the top vents, but so far it has not been an issue. There are also exhaust vents located on the rear of the helmet.
The chin strap uses a quick release buckle, which allows you to adjust fit without having to adjust the strap itself. There is also a padded section that is under the chin strap. It seems like a simple thing that most people may not consider, but if you have a beard and have gotten it caught in a buckle, you will really appreciate.
Bluetooth
Without the Bluetooth, the Outrush R would be a lot of helmet for the money. The integrated Bluetooth makes it one of the best values on the market. The Bluetooth controls are located on the left side of the helmet. The controls do stick off of the helmet, very much like an added system. I do wish the design was better integrated into the helmet. All of the functions are controlled by three buttons. I have been able to use the buttons on the helmet fairly easily, even with gloves on. To operate the Bluetooth, you will need to download the Sena app to your phone. Within the app, you have the ability to set up your preferences and turn certain features on or off. You can also easily set up the intercom system within the app. There is a QR code that your passenger or other riders can scan to allow you to connect your helmets. The intercom system has a range of just about 1/2 mile. Sound quality of the speakers is very good. You can stream music from your phone and the system can play FM radio. My favorite feature is that it adjust the volume automatically based on outside noise levels. It took a little playing in the app to get the settings where I liked it. The moment I start the bike, the volume increases. Talking on the phone while riding is a new experience for me. To say I am impressed by the Sena system is an understatement. I've had conversations at 60 mph, and the person on the other end couldn't even tell I was on the motorcycle. The microphone does come with a wind sock, but I have not used yet or had a need to. You can answer a call with a simple voice command as well. I wish there was the ability to control Siri with the helmet to make calls, but that is not currently available. The system has an estimated talk time of 12 hours and I have found this to be true. It comes with a charging cable as well.
Fit
The Outrush R does run a little small. I usually wear a medium helmet. The large is a touch bigger than I would prefer, but fits perfect with a thin skull cap. The interior is removable for cleaning. The helmet is offered in Small, Medium, Large, X Large, and XX Large.
To measure use a flexible measuring tape and measure horizontally around your head about 1" above your ears and eyebrows.
Small: 21 1/2 - 21 7/8
Medium: 22 1/4 - 22 5/8
Large: 23 - 23 1/2
XL: 23 7/8 - 24 1/4
XXL: 24 5/8 - 25
